The political atmosphere in River Gee County intensified on Saturday, October 3, when the National Independence Movement for Boakai (NIMBO) met at the Fish Town Community Hall.

The partisans rallied grassroot supporters behind President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and the governing Unity Party (UP).

The meeting, which drew supporters together from all over the county, was to consolidate support for the president’s development agenda.

They also laid early groundwork for the president anticipated re-election campaign in 2029.

The major highlight of the gathering was the political declaration by former River Gee County Superintendent, Philip Q. Nyenuh. Nyenuh announced his defection from the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) to the Unity Party during the meeting.

While addressing the crowd of supporters, Nyenuh said, his decision to withdraw support from the CDC was due to his confidence in Pres. Boakai’s leadership, and the direction of the current administration. “I have henceforth, withdrawn my support from the CDC. Today, I declared my full support to UP, and to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

Nyenuh told the gathering to a deafening round of applause from NIMBO supporters that his support of the governing party was due to ongoing development projects in the Southeast.

Mohamed Bah, who spoke on behalf of the office of Isaac Boy Choloply, assured the gathering of the office full commitment to support Pres. Boakai’s re-election bid.

Bah declared: “River Gee stands to benefit more from continued collaboration with the central government.” In his remark, Samuel Paye, NIMBO River Gee County Chairman, outlined his leadership’s strategy to mobilize massive grassroots support for Pres. Boakai, and to work alongside the three sitting representatives of the county to ensure a united front for UP in the Southeast.

“Our job is to organize, mobilize, and ensure that the county remains solidly behind the rescue mission.”  Ben Karty, Coordinator of the Ministry of Youth and Sports assigned in the county, described UP rise to power as a mission to “rescue the nation from years of unnecessary hardship.” Karty called on young people, and first-time voters, to rally behind Pres. Boakai to continue his development agenda beyond his first term.

The Fish Town meeting was the latest in a series of early political engagements in the Southeastern region, as political actors, and movements begin realignments, and mobilization ahead of the 2029 presidential and legislative elections.

NIMBO, a national grassroots movement in support of Boakai, says, it will continue the county-by-county engagements to strengthen UP base at the local level.
