Teachers assigned in Grand Kru County have used program held in observance of World Teachers’ Day to highlight challenges confronting educators.

As such, they have called for increment in salaries, and improved conditions for government assigned teachers.

The teachers made the appeal on Monday, October 5, the date observed globally as World Teachers’ Day, which recognizes the contribution of educators to national development, and the importance of quality teaching.

Eddie Peabody Samah, President of the Education Department, and P. Wiah Nimely, a teacher, called on education authorities to pay greater attention to the welfare of teachers.

They claimed that teachers continue to face challenges in the performance of their duties, but said, their compensation should better reflect the important role they play in the education system.

They also appealed to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to make teachers’ welfare a priority in the national budget, as government have allocated for various sectors, and categories of public servants.

They also claimed that educators are responsible for preparing the next future workforce, yet many continue to work under difficult conditions, while receiving salaries they consider inadequate.

They further compared teachers’ earnings with the compensation of other categories of public servants, including doctors and lawmakers.

They urged government to consider the improvement of teachers’ salaries.

The teachers said, better remuneration, could contribute to improved morale, and attract, and retain qualified educators, particularly in rural counties such as Grand Kru where schools can face additional challenges.

They also called on educational stakeholders to listen to teachers’ concerns, and take concrete steps that will improve their working conditions.

The educators’ appeal comes as Liberia joins countries around the world in commemorating World Teachers’ Day, 2026, providing an opportunity to recognize teachers while also drawing attention to the challenges affecting the profession.

The teachers said, they remain committed to educate children, and contribute to the development of the country, but want the government to demonstrate greater commitment to their welfare.

They called for continued dialogue between teachers, the government and education stakeholders to identify practical solutions to the challenges facing the teaching profession.
