President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has launched the Presidential Clean Cities Initiative (PCCI), a new government intervention to improve urban sanitation while creating short-term employment opportunities for young Liberians.
The initiative is designed to support ongoing sanitation crisis, promote environmental stewardship, and encourage communities to take greater responsibility for maintaining clean, and healthy public spaces.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the first phase of the program will begin on October 1, in eight counties, covering 14 cities, and one township.
The initiative is expected to engage 1,250 young people, and 30 Community-based Organizations (CBOs) in sanitation activities, environmental programs, and public awareness campaigns.
Targeted areas include Monrovia and Paynesville; Ganta, Saniquellie, and Tappita; Gbarnga and Totota; Foya and Voinjama; Buchanan; Kakata, Unification City, and Schieffelin Township; Tubmanburg and Zwedru.
Government says, applications are now open to eligible young people, and CBOs in the targeted communities.
Applicants may submit designated application forms, or available hard-copy applications during the established application period.
Pres. Boakai has meanwhile, called for collective action among citizens, youth organizations, CBOs, and local authorities to sustain cleaner communities, and strengthen public participation in national development.
