Residents of Wlowien Community in Karluway District #2, Maryland County, have officially commissioned a newly constructed market facility valued at US$24,196.37.

The project expected to boost commerce, improve access to markets for farm produce, and provide a safer trading environment for farmers and marketers.

The facility was dedicated on Friday, July 11, following the completion with funds generated from service rental fees paid by the Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP).

The funds came under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between MOPP and the Wlowien Community.

Willie Daileh, Chairperson of the Wlowien Community Land Lease Agreement Committee, said the market was their top development priority after wide consultations with residents.

Daileh said, the MoU required the community to form a committee to manage service rental revenue and implement development projects.

The committee later submitted a proposal for the market, which the MOPP approved.

“Construction began in 2023, but it was completed in 2025, at the cost of US$24,196.37. This project is a milestone for Wlowien. It will give our farmers and small-scale traders a secured and organized place to do business and expand opportunities to sell their produce.”

The ceremony brought together officials of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA), local government authorities, youth and women groups.

LMA General Superintendent, Maryland Chapter, Abraham C. Wilson, lauded the Wlowien Development Committee and residents for investing in infrastructure that promotes economic growth.

Wilson urged inhabitants to take full ownership of the facility.

“Keep this market clean and maintain it properly so it can serve your children and grandchildren. I also encourage farmers to bring their vegetables and other produce here. With regular trading, buyers from neighboring communities will come, and this will increase household income.”

Community members say, the new market ends years of selling under harsh weather conditions, and in disorganized spaces.

Leaders believe the facility will strengthen agriculture, improve food security, and serve as a central hub for trade.

The Wlowien market adds to growing efforts by host communities in Maryland County to use benefits from concession agreements to address pressing development needs.
