Gender Ministry Makes L$324K …From ‘Persistent Non-Support’

The Ministry of Gender, Children Protection and Social Welfare (MGCS) has generated the total amount of $L324,500, and US$2,965 in the month of July from 20 cases that involved ‘persistent no-support.’

Persistent non-support is a legal offense that occurs when a person knowingly, and repeatedly fails to provide financial, or physical care to a spouse, child, or other dependent despite having the ability to do so.

Gender Minister, Gbeme Horace made the disclosure via her Facebook account on Monday, August 31.

Madam Horace reported that about 54 persistent non-support cases were reported to the ministry with the capably to handle 20 of the cases that accumulated said monies.

“Last month, we received 54 persistent non-support cases. Through mediation at the Ministry.”

The 20 cases, Madam Horace said, resolved generated L$324,500, and US$2,965 for 22 children covering one-month period.

She said, the 54 cases received for persistent non-support, two men reported, while 52 women reported respectively.

Madam Horace said, six cases were referred to court while 28 cases remain pending.

She reflected on the stress, and complexity staff go through daily to remove children from the streets, and restore dignity to them.

Madam Horace: “The issue of persistent non-support is visible, and exposes the huge threat that it poses to the next generation. As the minister, I want to thank, and celebrate all fathers, who continue to be the bedrock of their families, and are available diligently for their children. We see you, and we don’t take you for granted, because we see the terrifying impact of neglect every day.”

Madam Horace then urged more men to stand up, and take responsibility of their family, and home.

Persistent non-support is the act of a biological father, or mother of a child, or children who engages in total neglect of the child or children, in support of economic wellbeing.
