A new education fundraising campaign targeting more than 500 schoolchildren is set to launch in Bong County, with organizers seeking over L$2 million to help students from underserved communities remain in school.
One Life Liberia Incorporated, in partnership with the Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo Foundation for Development, is expected to launch the scholarship fundraising initiative on September 12, in Shankpallai Town, Zota Administrative District.
The initiative is being presented as an intervention to ease the burden faced by families struggling to meet the educational needs of their children.
Organizers say, the program will provide educational assistance, including essential school materials, to grade-school students in Bong County, and potentially other parts of the country.
Speaking during a special interview with Super Bongese Radio over the weekend, Timothy R. Yoko, Administrative Assistant to Environmental Protection Agency Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo said, the initiative is expected to support more than 500 students.
Yoko said, the program will require more than L$2 million, placing the success of the initiative largely on the willingness of individuals, institutions, and organizations to contribute to the fundraising effort.
He urged Liberians, and potential partners to support the campaign, arguing that providing school materials, and other educational assistance could help children from underserved communities access, and remain engaged in education.
The planned fundraising event is expected to bring together community members, organizations, institutions, and other stakeholders in an effort to mobilize financial support for the scholarship program.
But beyond the launch, the real test will be whether organizers can turn the fundraising promise into tangible assistance for the children they intend to serve.
With the campaign targeting more than 500 students, questions of transparency, beneficiary selection, and accountability will be critical to maintain public confidence as funds are mobilized, and distributed.
Meanwhile, Yoko also disclosed plans by the EPA to establish a regional laboratory in Bong County.
Yoko said, land for the laboratory has already been procured, while construction is expected to begin next year.
The proposed laboratory is expected to strengthen the EPA’s capacity to conduct environmental assessments, and laboratory-related activities within the region, although further details about the project’s cost, timeline, and technical specifications were not provided.
The scholarship campaign, and proposed laboratory project represent two separate initiatives, but both have the potential to generate significant public interest in the county.
For the scholarship drive, however, organizers face the immediate challenge of convincing donors that every contribution will translate into meaningful educational support.
The September 12 launch in Shankpallai will therefore mark the beginning of what organizers hope will become a major education-support initiative for children facing financial barriers to schooling.
