U.S Embassy Equips LNP
The United States Embassy near Monrovia has donated several items to the Liberia National Police (LNP) worth US$39,809.50, aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the police force in the country. Receiving the donation on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the LNP headquarters in Monrovia, the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Gregory O. Coleman, extolled the US Government through their embassy for the donations. At the same time, the Inspector General of Police re-echoed the LNP’s commitments to protecting human rights based on gender inclusivity and respect for the rule of law. He also committed the LNP to the protection of Liberians and the sustenance of peace and ensuring that economic development continues to thrive based on the respect for the rule of law. He noted that during the next few years, the LNP will focus on human security for active engagement with the communities. IG Coleman also indicated that the LNP is committed to building trust, legitimacy, increasing accountability to the people and working closely with the communities to address some of the root causes of conflicts as a means of preventing and reducing crime. He stressed that the LNP is also committed to building a safe community, through the support of partners, citing that the safety of the community does not just rest on the police but all other agencies of government to commit to the process. “As we endeavor to improve the livelihood of our people, we want to assure the Governments of the USA and Liberia that the donation will be properly accounted for and will be used for its intended purpose,” IG Coleman indicated; adding, “I want to say thanks to the US taxpayers for their continuous support to the People of Liberia. For his part, the United States of America Ambassador to Liberia, Mark Toner, said the rule of law is essential to the growth of every country, of which Liberia is no exception. The US diplomat highlighted that “Rule of Law” is a vital component of President Boakai administration’s arrest agenda. “The enforcement of the rule of law is of course, the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice which is primarily resting on the shoulders of you LNP men and women in blue. America is proud to have been by your side since the end of the conflict in 2003 and they will continue to do so,” the US envoy stated. He added: “I also want to use this occasion to recognize and compliment you for the tremendous growth that the LNP has made over the years, particular in the successful role in ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections post-war and especially since Liberia assumed full responsibility of its own internal security,” The American Ambassador asserted that Liberia has earned a lot of respect from its peers in the international community because of its demonstrated commitment to building and maintaining the peace due to the professionalism of Liberia’s Police Force. He added that the leadership of Inspector General Coleman has laid out a very strong vision of a police force that fosters diversity through gender inclusivity, adding that they believe that this effort will continue to yield results as a diverse police force brings increased productivity, strength, and accountability to the public. Amb. Toner applauded the LNP IG for championing a mindset shift which seeks to showcase the LNP as a community oriented public service force, rather than one focused solely on enforcement, indicating that each one of them plays a significant role in the success of these efforts.”Today, I would just like to reassure you that the United States remains committed to supporting the LNP, the security sector, and the Government of Liberia towards our shared values, which include supporting rule of law and accountability across all sectors,” Amb. Toner said. LINA
