Rep Toles Alarms Increased Illicit Drugs’ Sale By: Fiona Benson Kollie

The issue of drugs fight which is one of the pillars of the Rescue Team, is presently under spotlight with one of the Unity Party Lawmaker alarming over the increment of illicit drugs sale in his district. In a communication written to the plenary of the of the majority block of the House of Representatives Thursday, Montserrado District 8 Lawmaker Prince Toles alarm over the increase of drugs sale in his district, especially the Soniewine Community which according to him, is gradually destroying the lives of Liberians particularly the youthful generation across the country and his district at large. In his communication, Rep. Toles told the plenary that increase of illicit drugs sale across the country is very alarming and as such there is a need that state actors become to act immediately stating that his district is no exceptions especially the Soniewine Community.

He added that it is upon this back drop that he has decided to write to seek plenary indulgence to invite the Director of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency and the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police to address the prevailing situation of open sale of illegal drugs across the country especially his district. Explaining further, the Montserrado District 8 Lawmaker said the recent situation that claimed his attention, is the current open sale of drugs in the Soniewine Community, especially just 50ft from a learning institution, the Soniewine Public School, where young Liberian children are enrolled stating that this situation is very alarming as it concerned the exposure of the Liberian children to the risk associated with witnessing drug transportation and drugs in the immediate vicinity. “As we continue our collective efforts in the fight against drugs abuse and trafficking, it is crucial that we take swift actions to address this press issue,” Rep. Toles lamented. He also said the close proximity of the illicit drugs sale to a school environment is troubling, as it may normalize and glamorize drug use in the eyes of the youth stating there is a need the  government act promptly as to shield the children from harmful influence that could have lasting detrimental effects on the well-being future prospect. Meanwhile, the motion was made by Maryland County District 3 Representatives Austin Taylor that the Bosses of the Liberia National Police and LDEA be made to appear on Tuesday share insight and propose strategies on how they intend to combat the problem effective to eradicate open illicit drug sale in the various communities across the country.
