United Opposition Search Begins
-As CDC 22nd Anniversary Rallies Teammates
Liberia is approximately two and half years away from nationwide elections; as the governing Unity Party and a record number of opposition political parties continue to throw jabs at each other over who can best lead the country amid increasingly difficult challenges confronting the masses.
It is no illusion that the closeness of the last presidential election results in 2023 between the defeated governing party- Coalition for Democratic Change(CDC) by then and the current governing Unity Party signaled a greatly ‘divided’ nation.
Currently, a political chart of nullification and condemnation with governing party on one hand while opposition parties on the other hand has persistently fueled bitterness, disunity and deepened division amongst those in state power and opposition elements who are considered critics of the regime.
The political tradition of opposition not recognizing progress made by the government in power seems irreversible while the declaration by the regime in power that past governments did very little or nothing to improve the living stands of the people also continues.
As the governing Unity Party appears directly or indirectly strategizing for a second term win come 2029, opposition political parties are apparently maneuvering for a united front to unseat the UP through the ballot box.
An outshoot of opposition conglomeration of this kind is said to be equated to the June 27, 2026 Congress for Democratic Change 22nd Anniversary celebration held in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, Southeast Liberia, miles away from Monrovia, Liberia’s political capitol.
It slowly but surely emerged that the CDC was organizing its anniversary in that southeastern county’s political seat, but supporters and sympathizers of the governing Unity Party began uttering that in no way could any significant bearing or leverage weigh in on the current regime ahead of the 2029 nationwide elections as a result of the so-called CDC 22nd anniversary.
Policy makers of the present regime did not foresee crowd pulling and any significance of the venue of the anniversary when it comes to vote rich counties in Liberia. Fingers were pointed at Nimba, Bong, Montserrado; for instance, as counties that can showcase strength in terms of popularity and numerical weight at elections.
A political commentator who appears siding with the government penned a comment that all the counties in southeast Liberia combined can only produce ‘160,000 votes’ and the CDC anniversary event in Zwedru was just a distraction of the progress the UP-led government is making.
Amid claims and counterclaims, the anniversary remained on course as attendants assembled in Zwedru according to protocols.
As reports indicated, not only partisans of the CDC turned for the event, prominent figures of other opposition political parties like the Alternative National Congress (ANC), All Liberian Party (ALP), Movement for Positive Change (MPC), Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), as well as other opposition members, were said to have graced the ceremony in solidarity.
Apparently as a testament of future possible political alignment to take on the governing Unity Party in 2029, invitations given to other opposition parties to attend the anniversary provided ANC Political Leader- Alexander B. Cummings the opportunity to serve as keynote speaker at the occasion.
“𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞”
In his speech, ANC Political Leader Cummings called on opposition political parties to unite and work together to remove the ruling Unity Party government in the 2029 elections.
Cummings praised the CDC for giving ordinary Liberians a stronger voice in national politics. He also commended former President George Manneh Weah, saying his rise from humble beginnings represents the hopes of many Liberians.
Cummings said Liberia continues to struggle because of poor leadership, unfair treatment, weak government institutions, and growing poverty. He accused the Unity Party government of serving the interests of a small group of people while leaving many citizens behind.
Cummings also claimed that the government is creating division, weakening democratic institutions, and failing to respect the rule of law.
According to him, these actions have reduced public trust in the country’s leadership, pointing to rising poverty, hunger, poor healthcare, and limited education opportunities as signs that many Liberians are still suffering despite government claims of economic progress.
On national accountability, Cummings called for an independent investigation into the reported US$19 million drug seizure at Roberts International Airport. He also demanded investigations into the Foya development project and recent tensions along the Liberia-Guinea border, saying those responsible should be held accountable.
Cummings urged opposition parties, civil society groups, and religious leaders to stand together in defending democracy and demanding better governance. He said rebuilding Liberia should be more important than personal political ambitions.
“The kind of change we seek is bigger than any one person,” Cummings told the crowd. “I am ready to play any role necessary to help build a better Liberia.”
He then called on Liberians to unite, fight poverty, strengthen democracy, and create more opportunities for everyone.
“Together, we can replace the failed Rescue Mission in 2029 and begin the mission to fix Liberia,” Cummings said.
