Liberia Signs US$60 Million Coffee Investment Deal to Revive Sector and Create Jobs
Monrovia, Liberia – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has signed a landmark 20-year partnership agreement with JR Farms Group Inc. aimed at revitalizing the country’s coffee sector and boosting agricultural productivity.
The agreement is expected to attract more than US$60 million in investment, support over 200,000 farmers, develop more than 250,000 hectares of coffee farms, plant 200 million coffee trees, and create over 300,000 jobs across the coffee value chain.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah described the agreement as a significant milestone in Liberia’s agricultural transformation agenda.
Dr. Nuetah emphasized that the success of the partnership will be measured by its impact on ordinary Liberians, particularly farmers and young people.
“The true measure of our success will not be the signatures today on this document. It will be measured by the number of farmers empowered, jobs created, young people engaged, hectares developed, and livelihoods improved as a result of this partnership,” he stated.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Liberia’s coffee industry through farmer training programs, the provision of improved coffee seedlings, establishment of processing facilities, expanded market access, and increased value addition.
The initiative also places strong emphasis on youth participation and rural economic development.
Coffee Liberica, Liberia’s flagship coffee product under the Food and Agriculture Organization’s One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative, is expected to benefit significantly from the agreement as the country seeks to reclaim its position in the global coffee market.
JR Farms Group Chief Executive Officer Olawale Rotimi Oyeyemi described the agreement as the beginning of a transformative journey for Liberia’s coffee sector.
“The signing today for us is significant, but it is also a call to run. We consider this a business marathon. The race begins now, and the journey starts today,” Oyeyemi said.
The partnership was facilitated under the Government of Liberia’s Economic Diplomacy initiative, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs playing a key role in fostering engagements that led to the agreement.
