Former Bong County Electoral District #5 Representative Edward Wormen Karfiah, has placed a long-term agricultural investment at the center of an initiative to empower farmers in the county.
Karfiah, who is reportedly preparing to seek a senatorial seat in the 2029 elections, is supporting farmers through an initiative known as “Naakaika Enterprise,” a name derived from the Kpelleh vernacular meaning “here is the visit, or visitation.”
The initiative represents a departure from the short-term assistance often associated with politicians, including temporary financial support, and other quick-impact interventions. Instead, it focuses on tree-crop farming, particularly orange, and cashew production, as a potential source of sustainable income for rural families.
The program reportedly began around the 2023 elections, when Karfiah procured, and distributed orange seedlings to farmers in several communities.
Some beneficiaries have since reported that the orange trees are growing well, raising hopes that the farms could eventually produce fruits for household consumption, and commercial purpose.
In 2024, the initiative expanded into cashew farming, with seedlings distributed to farmers in several parts of the county.
Some of those earlier beneficiaries have reported continued growth of their cashew trees, with some trees reportedly beginning to show signs of fruit production.
The latest distribution took place on Tuesday, September 1, when Karfiah, through his aide, Martin Fofana, presented already-grown cashew trees to farmers in Duiata Town, Electoral District #2.
About 10 beneficiaries from Duiata Town, Gbenequelleh Town, and nearby communities participated in the distribution. Each beneficiary received more than 50 cashew trees for planting.
