Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe has accused President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration of inadvertently giving former President George Manneh Weah greater relevance and popularity in Liberia.
Gongloe argued that what he described as the government’s repeated treatment of former President Weah at Roberts International Airport could generate public sympathy for the former Liberian leader.
According to Cllr. Gongloe, whenever Weah travels outside Liberia and returns to the country, authorities allegedly prevent him from using the VIP Lounge at the airport.
He said such actions could have the opposite effect of what the government may intend, as they could make ordinary Liberians sympathize with Weah and ultimately increase his political support.
“Every time former President Weah goes out of the country and comes back, they stop him from entering the VIP Lounge,” Gongloe stated, arguing that such treatment could cause people to feel sympathy for the former president.
Gongloe further criticized some actions of the Boakai administration, describing them as “very childish.” He maintained that such decisions are contributing to Weah’s growing popularity rather than weakening his political relevance.
The former presidential candidate said the government should be careful about how it handles political opponents, warning that actions perceived as unfair could strengthen public support for those being targeted.
Gongloe’s comments come amid ongoing political discussions in Liberia over the relationship between the Unity Party-led government and former President Weah, as well as Weah’s continued influence in the country’s political landscape.
