Joy and relief have returned to Kiteabo Nyenawiliken in Kiteabo Chiefdom, Electoral District #3, River Gee County.
The euphoria followed the rehabilitation of the community’s damaged hand pumps, which was done by the Kuncares Foundation.
The Foundation’s intervention has ended years of hardship for residents, who were forced to drink ‘unhygienic’ water from nearby creeks and River Gbeh.
The breakthrough comes just days after an in-depth report that exposed the worsening water crisis, and the serious health risks it posed to locals.
For years, residents of Nyenawiliken had appealed to government, humanitarian groups, and development partners for help.
Community leaders warned that the lack of safe water was exposing the more than 400 residents to waterborne diseases.
The hand pumps were originally installed by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Years of wear and tear, combined with a lack of spare parts, eventually rendered them non-functional.
Although a local technician was trained to maintain them, repair efforts failed due to the unavailability of parts.
Touched by the community’s plight, the Kuncares Foundation, headed by Counselor Kunkunyon Teh, rehabilitated all damaged hand pumps in Nyenawiliken.
The Foundation also extended the project to neighboring Kiteabo Tarwrken, giving hundreds more residents access to clean and safe drinking water.
