Liberia is set to take center stage at this year’s (2026) United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
For that, government has announced three high-level side events designed to showcase the country’s priorities on youth, women, peace, security, natural resources, and sustainable development.
Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, made the disclosure during press briefing on Tuesday, Setember 8, in Monrovoa.
Piah said, the events will provide Liberia with an important platform to advance its national interests, and contribute to global discussions on peace, and development.
The three events are particularly significant as Liberia continues to serve as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The position gives the country an opportunity to promote issues that are central to national development, and international engagement.
The first side event, titled: “Liberia Vision for Youth and Security: Investing in Pathways to Reform,” will be hosted by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on September 18, at the Nelson Mandela Hall of the African Union Permanent Mission in New York.
The event is expected to spotlight Liberia’s approach to youth development, and security. It will also promote greater investment in opportunities, and reform initiatives to empower young people, and strengthen their contribution to national peace, and stability.
On September 21, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, will host a high-level side event on Women, Peace and Security at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The gathering will bring together global leaders, policymakers, and development stakeholders to discuss the critical role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and security.
It will highlight the importance of meaningful participation of women in decision-making processes.
The third event, scheduled for September 23, will be hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the theme: “Nexus Conflict and Natural Resources Pathways to Peace, Resilience, and Sustainable Development.”
The forum is expected to examine the connection between natural resources, conflict prevention, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
Piah: “Liberia will present its national positions, and priorities during the General Debate of the UNGA on September 24. The presentation will further provide the country with an opportunity to articulate its vision, and contribute to international policy discussions.”
Meanwhile, the government says, the three side events form part of Liberia’s diplomatic engagement at UNGA, and are aligned with the country’s priorities as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.
It reinforces Liberia’s commitment to peace, inclusive development, and stronger international cooperation.
