Gbonota School In Crisis

By Samuel Flomo, Jr.

Crisis has engulfed the Gbonota Public School in Electoral District #4 Bong county.

For that, the school has appealed for urgent government intervention as poor infrastructure, inadequate learning materials, and a shortage of teachers continue to affect the education of about 200 students.

The principal, Johnson Nkyainwoe says, the institution is facing serious challenges thereby making it increasingly difficult for students, and teachers to operate in a safe, and conducive learning environment.

Nkyainwoe said, storm recently damaged portions of the school’s roof, leaving some classrooms exposed to rain.

He said, several classrooms are also experiencing leaks, while sections of the walls have deteriorated, and require immediate renovation.

The principal further disclosed that the school does not have enough furniture to accommodate its growing student population.

Some students are reportedly forced to share broken chairs, while others sometimes sit on the floor during lessons.

Nkyainwoe said, inadequate classroom space, and a shortage of chalkboards have also created additional challenges for teachers.

The situation, he noted, has affected the quality of instruction, and students’ ability to learn effectively.

Gbonota Public School also serves students from neighboring Gbarpolu County, but its crisis has increased pressure on its already limited facilities, and staff.

Nkyainwoe expressed concern that the lack of consistent support will be the cause for some volunteer teachers to leave, further worsening teachers’ shortage.

He meanwhile, called on the Ministry of Education to urgently renovate the school, provide adequate furniture, and instructional materials.
