Gbarnga City Corporation Pressurized

Prominent Bong County businessman Varney Brown has sharply criticized the weak enforcement of municipal regulations by the Gbarnga City Corporation (GCC).
Brown has meanwhile, called for urgent action to tackle worsening sanitation, congestion, and the uncontrolled occupation of public spaces.
His criticism comes amid growing concerns among residents, and business operators over the condition of several parts of Gbarnga, where garbage, roadside activities, and structures erected in public areas continue to raise questions about the effectiveness of city authorities.
Brown told a press briefing in Gbarnga that GCC must move beyond announcements, and demonstrate stronger leadership by enforcing existing city ordinances without fear, or favor.
He said, streets, sidewalks, and other areas intended for public use should not become permanent extensions of businesses, homes, or informal commercial activities.
Brown argued that the continued presence of unauthorized structures, and activities along major roads contributes to congestion, and creates an increasingly disorderly environment.
He called on GCC to conduct a comprehensive assessment of structures, and activities occupying public spaces, and take appropriate action against those found in violation of municipal regulations.
Brown also challenged the city authorities to make sanitation a regular priority rather than relying on occasional cleanup exercises.
He proposed that the GCC dedicate at least one Saturday every month to a citywide cleanup campaign, with residents, businesses, community leaders, and surrounding communities encouraged to participate.
Brown said, such an initiative could improve waste management, protect public health, and restore pride in Gbarnga’s appearance.
He further urged the corporation to establish a consistent waste-management system capable of ensuring that garbage is collected, and properly disposed of across the city.
Brown’s comments place renewed pressure on GCC to explain how effectively it is carrying out its responsibilities, particularly regarding sanitation, enforcement, and urban planning.
