Maryland County Senator, James P. Biney, has provided L$580,000 in direct financial assistance to four schools in the county.
The money is to help students struggling with economic hardship stay in school for the 2026 academic year.
The assistance was presented on Tuesday, September 8, through the county coordinator Badio Blecon on behalf of the Biney Education Foundation.
Blecon said, the donation is to ensure that no student drops out, “because of fees.”
The four beneficiary schools include Pleebo High School, Soloken Central High School, New Pleebo Elementary and Junior High School, and Bolenken Central High School.
Blecon explained how the initiative is purely “humanitarian, and not political. It is intended to support vulnerable students, and reduce financial burden on parents.”
Sen. Biney’s educational support package includes about 3,000 school bags, 75 cartons of copybooks, approximately L$3 million in educational assistance, and scholarship opportunities for students in Liberia, and abroad.
Emmanuel Toe, Chairman of the Biney Education Foundation, and former Maryland County Education Officer, recalled how the program started in 2025, and is designed to run for about 10 years.
The Foundation plans to reach more than 200 schools, including public, private, and university students in the county.
He added that the Foundation will continue to identify students, and schools most in need as the program expands.
Authorities of the beneficiary schools welcomed the intervention, and thanked Sen. Biney, while also highlight additional challenges.
The Biney Education Foundation says it will continue its assessment and rollout of support to more schools in the coming months.
