The Presidential Task Force on Combating Illicit Mining (PORT) has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities in Grand Cape Mount County, enforcing a strict “No Permit, No Mining” policy aimed at ending unauthorized mining operations and ensuring compliance with government regulations.
The task force over the weekend arrested 11 individuals during an operation in Gonelor Town, Tewor District, Grand Cape Mount County.
Those arrested during the raid include six Liberians, four Sierra Leoneans, and one Ghanaian.
The Head of Taskforce, Abraham Kromah, disclosed that those arrested are Gonelor Town Chairlady, Madam Mama Sheriff, who is also accused of involvement in an attack on personnel of the Ministry of Mines and Energy several weeks ago.
Kromah stated that the alleged attack resulted in the assault of the County Mining Officer and Regional Coordinator, as well as damage to a government vehicle.
He further disclosed that five foreign nationals arrested have been turned over to the Liberia Immigration Service for verification of their residency status.
The operation forms part of PORT’s ongoing efforts to combat illicit mining, enforce mining regulations, and ensure that individuals and businesses engaged in mining activities obtain the necessary government permits before operating.
