Police officers assigned to the Pleebo Police Barracks said they are living and working under inhumane conditions that are taking a toll on their welfare and service delivery.
A recent visit to the facility revealed a building in advanced disrepair. Leaking roofs, damaged ceilings, cracked walls, broken doors and windows, and poor sanitary facilities dominate the barracks.
During heavy rains, several rooms flood, forcing officers and their families to endure constant water seepage.
Officers who spoke on condition of anonymity described the barracks as unsafe and unfit for habitation.
“The condition of the barracks is not encouraging. Many officers are living here with difficult circumstances.
During heavy rainfall, some rooms leak badly, making it uncomfortable to stay indoors,” one officer said.
Residents say overcrowding and lack of regular maintenance have made the situation worse. Some sections of the building now pose safety risks, with weak walls and broken structures.
According to officers, concerns about the barracks have been raised through official channels for years, but no rehabilitation has been done. Many say they continue to serve despite the poor housing because of duty to the country.
Pleebo residents have joined officers in appealing to government. They argue that police play a critical role in maintaining law and order and deserve decent accommodation.
“Improving officers’ welfare could increase morale and lead to more effective policing in our district,” one community member said.
The Pleebo Police Barracks houses officers responsible for security duties in Pleebo and surrounding communities.
The deteriorating facility has raised fresh questions about the welfare of security personnel in rural Liberia, where aging infrastructure remains a major challenge.
Local police command officials had not issued a public statement on rehabilitation plans. Officers and residents say they remain hopeful that the Liberia National Police leadership, Ministry of Justice, and development partners will intervene quickly to renovate the barrack.
