Over Delayed Findings On US 19/2 M Cocaine Seizure:
House Summons LDEA Head
The delay by LDEA Authority to provide the public with findings from the US19.2 million drug seizure, the House of Representatives has summoned the head of the anti drug agency.
The House on Thursday, June 11, 2026 through its Chief Clark, mandated the leadership of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) to appear before Plenary on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 to provide a comprehensive report on the Agency’s efforts in combating drug trafficking and addressing concerns arising from the recent seizure of cocaine valued at approximately US$19.2 million at Roberts International Airport (RIA).
The decision followed a communication submitted by Bong County Electoral District #6 Representative, Moima Briggs-Mensah, who called for heightened legislative oversight into the country’s anti-drug enforcement efforts and the circumstances surrounding the recent drug interception.
In her communication, Representative Briggs-Mensah acknowledged the seizure as a significant achievement by the LDEA but noted that the incident raises serious concerns regarding the effectiveness of Liberia’s border security systems, cargo screening mechanisms, and the country’s growing vulnerability as a transit point for international narcotics trafficking.
The Bong County lawmaker emphasized that over the years, the LDEA has benefited from substantial government and donor support, including training programs, logistical assistance, equipment donations, and budgetary allocations intended to strengthen its operational capacity.
As part of the House’s constitutional oversight responsibility, Rep. Briggs-Mensah requested that the Agency provide detailed information regarding the impact of these interventions, the challenges confronting its operations, and the measures being implemented to prevent Liberia from becoming a major transit route for illicit drugs.
She further stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of major drug cases, noting that while drug seizures are frequently publicized, there is often limited public information regarding the investigations, arrests, prosecutions, and convictions associated with such cases.
Accordingly, Plenary has requested the LDEA to provide:
A detailed report on the recent cocaine seizure at Roberts International Airport;
An update on the progress made by the Agency in combating drug trafficking, including achievements resulting from government and donor support;
The status of investigations and prosecutions connected to major drug-related cases; and
Measures being undertaken to strengthen border security and cargo screening systems across Liberia.
Members of the House emphasized that the fight against illicit drugs remains a national priority and that safeguarding Liberia’s youth and future generations requires sustained vigilance, accountability, and effective law enforcement.
The appearance of the LDEA leadership before Plenary is expected to provide lawmakers and the public with greater insight into the Agency’s operations and ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking within and across Liberia’s borders.
