Police authorities in Bong County have ordered the closure of four major shops around the Old Ganta Parking Police Depot One in Gbarnga.
This follows concerns that the establishments were being used as nighttime gathering points by groups of Zogos, or the “disadvantaged youths,” who are mainly into petite crimes, and other vices against societal sanity.
The closure, according to police authorities, forms part of efforts to address abnormal gatherings, and strengthen public order in the area.
The four establishments, were reportedly frequented by groups of young people, who gathered around the shops during odd hours while residents have returned to bed.
Police said, the gatherings had become a concern for authorities responsible for maintaining security, and public order around the busy commercial area.
The closure was jointly carried out by the 9th Judicial Circuit Court, and the Bong County Police Command.
Depot One Commander, Jabateh M. Morhafee, said, the decision was to prevent the shops from becoming regular nighttime gathering points for criminal activities.
Morhafee: “The police intervention followed concerns about the activities taking place around the establishments mainly during late-night hours.
The shops reportedly operate during the day, and in some cases, remain open until approximately 3: a.m., providing tea, bread, and other goods to customers.
Police authorities said, the late operating hours contributed to the continued presence of groups of suspected Zogos around the establishments.
Bong County Police Commander, William Johnson, said, the action is part of efforts to address nighttime gatherings, and maintain public order.
Johnson said, law enforcement authorities have paid attention to activities that could potentially create security concerns, or disrupt the peaceful environment within the area.
The police intervention has drawn attention to the need for business owners operating late-night establishments to work closely with law enforcements, and comply with applicable regulations.
Authorities have also encouraged community members to cooperate with security personnel, and report activities they believe could threaten public safety.
The Old Ganta Parking area is considered an important commercial, and transportation hub in Gbarnga with businesses, and travelers frequently using the area.
Police authorities have not indicated how long the four shops will remain closed, or whether specific conditions must be met before they are allowed to reopen.
The closure comes as security authorities continue efforts to strengthen public order in Gbarnga, particularly in areas where large numbers of people gather during odd hours.
Johnson maintained how police action intend to promote a safer, and more orderly environment around the Old Ganta Parking area.
