Twenty-two of the ninety-nine escaped inmates from the Kakata jailbreak have been rearrested.
Authorities of the Liberia National Police (LNP) confirmed that 99 inmates escaped from the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, with 77 still at large after 22 were re-arrested.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 20. It brought normal activities, including religious services to stand still until police reinforcement arrived, and put up a chase.
Police Spokesperson Sam Collins said, the jailbreak occurred when some inmates were taken outside from their cells for ‘sunbath.’ But said, the reported sunbath was within the confined of the prison compound.
Collins: “The inmates exploited the situation, and escaped from the facility.”
He disclosed how authorities are currently unable to release the identities of the escaped inmates, “because prison records containing their information were destroyed during the stampede that pigeon-holed the escape setting.”
He said, the Ministry of Justice has begun reconstructing the records to identify the escaped prisoners.
“Once the process is completed, the names, and other relevant details of the fugitives will be made public to assist law enforcement, and the public in efforts to recapture those remaining at large.”
LNP says, security operations are ongoing across Margibi County, and surrounding areas as officers continue the search for the remaining escapees.
Authorities have meanwhile, urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any information that could lead to the arrest of the escaped inmates.
The Kakata prison facility encountered similar incident on September 8, 2024, when 77 of the inmates mounted the jailbreak, and escaped.
Up to press time late last night, there were no report of any re-arrest of the escapees.
