US$55K Clinic Serves Patients In 2 Counties

By Aaron B. Nemah

Construction of a new health facility in Gbeapo Joequieken has reached a window level, bringing long awaited healthcare closer to patients in rural southeast.

Located in Drubo Clan, Nyanwiliken Administrative District, Electoral District #2, the clinic is one of the biggest public health projects ever undertaken in the area.

For generations, residents of Joequieken and surrounding communities, have traveled long distances on poorly built roads to access medical care.

The lack of a facility has led to treatment delays, preventable deaths, and major risks for patients, among them pregnant women. River Gee County District #2 Representative, Isaac Boye Choloplay Wuo, has funded the project with approximately US$55,000 as part of his rural development agenda.

Once completed, it will serve residents of Joequieken, nearby towns in River Gee, and cross-border communities in Grand Kru County as well as patients from the growing gold-mining settlement of Philadelphia. The clinic is designed for safe, patient-centered care and will feature: Registration office and waiting area, male and female short-stay wards, delivery room for maternal care, nursing station, observation/recovery room, thee bathrooms, central hallway, front and rear porches. Services will include outpatient consultations, maternal and child healthcare, safe deliveries, emergency treatment, immunizations, disease prevention and health education.

Officials say, the clinic will reduce emergency referral times, lower preventable deaths, and strengthen overall community health.

The head contractor, Adolphus N. Glagan, said, work began June 8, and has progressed on schedule despite challenges in transporting materials on the deteriorating Kanweaken/Joequieken road. ”Our objective is not simply to construct a building, but to deliver a strong, durable and modern healthcare facility that will serve the people of Joequieken for many generations,” Glagan said. Residents have welcomed the project. They referred it as “historic investment.”

Community members say, the absence of a clinic has caused decades of suffering mainly patient’s care during emergency. When completed, the Joequieken Health facility will be the second functional health facility in Drubo Clan, complementing services at Klayken and expanding coverage in the district.

Rep. Wuo broke ground for the project in September 2025, when pledged to reduce healthcare hardships.
