‘Mining Activities’ Continue At Newaken Gold Camp

Ahead of court hearing, report has emerged that illegal mining activities have continued at a disputed gold-mining site in Newaken Community, Trehn Statutory District, Grand Kru County.

The report came in spite of ongoing legal dispute between the Southeastern Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and Hongyun Mining Company Incorporated.

The development comes as the parties were prepared to appear before the Worktaken Magisterial Court on Wednesday, July 22, where the court was expected to hear arguments surrounding competing claims to the gold-rich mining area.

An independent investigation conducted by a team of reporters on Monday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 21, found three excavators, one front-end loader, and other heavy-duty equipment at the disputed site.

During the visit, one excavator was seen operating at the location. The Chinese national reportedly operating the machine stepped down of the machine when he noticed the arrival of the media team.

Reporters also observed extensive land clearing, and large quantities of gravel piled up at the site, which appeared to be associated with ongoing mining activities.

The reported activities have raised concerns among members of the Southeastern Multipurpose Cooperative Society, who have called for operations at the site to be suspended until the court and relevant authorities determine, who has legal rights to the disputed claims.
