Monrovia was overwhelmed on Monday, July 27, as members of the University of Liberia (UL) campus-based Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) took to the streets of Central Monrovia.
The students demonstrated was described as a “march for jobs and justice.”
The student movement said, its decision to reject the official Independence Day celebrations in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, was intended to draw government attention to concerns over unemployment, economic hardship, governance, and social justice.
Protesters carried placards with different inscriptions, and chanted slogans, which called for greater opportunities for young people, and improved living conditions for ordinary Liberians.
The demonstration underscored growing public debate over the socioeconomic challenges, with organizers arguing that national celebrations should be accompanied by tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
Authorities monitored the protest as Independence Day activities continued elsewhere across the capital.
