‘Stop Politicizing Student Aid’ …Sen. Biney

By Aaron B. Nemah

Maryland County Senator James P. Biney, has cautioned against the politicizing educational assistance.

Biney stressed the need for support to students to remain a humanitarian gesture, but not a political tool.

He made the remarks when he responded to questions from journalists shortly after a groundbreaking ceremony in Gedetarbo, where he addressed growing rumors, and concerns about his contributions to the education sector.

Biney dismissed claims that he has done little to support education. He noted that scores of students have benefited from his personal scholarship scheme, including students studying abroad.

He explained how he also extended educational assistance to numerous Liberians over the years.

However, Sen. Biney warned that publicizing such gestures for political gain undermines the humanitarian purpose.

“If a person decides to politicize the help of others in terms of education, going on the radio to say: ‘I am helping others, I am this and that persons,’ then it is no longer humanitarian; but political.”

Biney said, challenges confronting the education sector are national in nature, and should be addressed through strong government intervention, rather than being turned into individual political competition.
