Senator Konneh Criticized For ‘Negative Online Rhetoric’
Deputy Minister of Information, Daniel O. Sando, has sharply criticized Senator Amara Konneh, accusing him of neglecting his duties as a legislator and engaging in negative online rhetoric that undermines the country’s progress. In a scathing response to the senator’s recent posts on social media, Sando raised concerns over Konneh’s extended absence from the Senate and the apparent conflict of interest surrounding his private contracts. Sando charged that Konneh had abandoned his legislative responsibilities for a full four months, violating the Senate’s rules. He further stated that after returning from his “safari” abroad, the senator’s only focus appeared to be posting critical content about the country on Facebook, aiming to paint a picture of hopelessness. “You abandoned your legislative functions for four solid months in violation of the Senate rules, and all you do after returning from your safari is come on Facebook and post negativity about the country to paint a picture that nothing good is happening. This is wrong!” Sando declared during a press conference.
The Deputy Minister also questioned the ethical implications of Konneh’s actions, claiming that he has continued to receive his monthly salary and benefits from the Senate while working on a private contract in the United States. Sando described this situation as a “conflict of interest” and suggested that Senate leadership should be concerned. “We all talk about fighting corruption, but the president alone cannot lead the fight against corruption. The Legislature has a pivotal role to play,” Sando stated. “On this score, I am concerned about your role as chair of the Joint Public Accounts Committee from the Senate.” Sando pointed out that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is one of the only committees in the legislature with a dedicated budget for its work. Despite this, he noted that over a year has passed without a single report being submitted, calling this a clear example of neglect and inefficiency. “If that’s not part of the problem, then I don’t know. Maybe you should be held accountable to the great people of Gbarpolu for neglecting to represent them in the Senate,” Sando added, emphasizing the senator’s failure to meet his obligations to his constituents. The comments have sparked a heated exchange between the two political figures, with Konneh yet to respond to the Deputy Minister’s accusations. This latest dispute highlights ongoing tensions within Liberia’s political landscape, especially surrounding issues of accountability and governance in the legislative branch. The Senate leadership has not yet issued an official statement regarding Sando’s allegations, but the debate is expected to continue as the country grapples with concerns over public sector accountability and the role of elected officials in Liberia’s development.
