Over safety concern for residents at ‘540’ and the Pago Island on road project in the communities have claimed lawmakers’ attention.

As such, Representatives on Capito Hill, have mandated their Committee on Public Works to invite the Minister of Public Works on the project.

Plenary took the decision based on communication Montserrado County Electoral District #5 Representative Prescilla Abram Cooper submitted.

Rep. Cooper had requested Plenary’s indulgence to invite the minister, or any duly authorized deputy, to appear before lawmakers to address safety measures being implemented to protect commuters, residents, and businesses during the ongoing road construction.

Rep. Cooper noted that the Peace Island/Pago Island Road project, has been widely welcomed for its potential to boost transportation and economic activities, but said, serious concerns have emerged from residents regarding the prevailing safety conditions along the corridor.

She said, from the onset of the rainy season, this has heightened fears among residents, even with the extensive excavation leaving large embankments of loose earth exposed to heavy rainfall.

Rep. Cooper further disclosed how residents fear the embankments could collapse, resulting in landslides or cave-ins that could threaten lives and damage homes and businesses along the corridor.

Moreover, the construction zone remains the primary access route for residents, including commercial drivers, motorcyclists, school children and market women.

She raised concerns about the adequacy of warning signs, barricades, reflective markers, and nighttime lighting meant to protect the public during construction.

Rep. Cooper said, the Committee has been asked to determine the current status of the project and the safety measures being implemented by the Ministry.

The Committee on Public Works is expected to report its findings and recommendations to Plenary following its engagement with the Ministry.
