Protect Local Industry In Liberia – Senetor Bartekwa tell Gov’t
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Bureau of Concessions, Investment and Labour Grand Kru County Senetor Numene T.H. Bartekwa has stressed the need for government to protect local manufacturing industry. Senator Bartekwa stated that protection local industry will go a long way to create jobs for the youthful population in Liberia. The Grand Kru Lawmaker made the statement Tuesday when the Senate Committee on Bureau of Concessions, Investment and Labour gave its report in Plenary after the Committee paid a visit to Sethi Steel industry recently. According to him, manufacturing steels locally in Liberia will strengthen the growth and development of domestic industries across Liberia. He noted that the industry is also helping local scarp dealers which are more than 25, 000 Liberians engage in that sector. Senator Bartekwa explained that protecting local industries will encourage more investors and investments to come to Liberia to engage in manufacturing local products. He said currently, the industry has more than 600 Liberian employees with 45 experts in the steel lab and they are also sharing their expertise with the Liberian employees at the same time. He maintained that Liberia cannot continue to import every building materials when there is a company which provide quality steel for construction in the nation Senator Bartekwa emphasized that the youth of Liberia are graduating from universities and technical colleges need to be absorb onto the work force of industries. Meanwhile, the plenary of the Senate has asked the Senate Committee on Bureau of Concessions, Investment and Labour to further investigate the company to understand the high cost of steel on the Liberian market.
