Police Officer Dismissed For 15-Yrs-Old Boy’s Death
The Liberia National Police (LNP) has dismissed, charged and forwarded to court, officer Ismael Trawally for the death of a 15-year-old boy identified as James Kandy of the Rehab Community. The Inspector General (IG) of the LNP Gregory O.W. Coleman said Thursday, July 11, 2024, during a press conference held at the LNP headquarters in Monrovia that the Criminal Investigation Department has charged officer Trawally with negligent homicide and will be forwarded to court to face the full weight of the law. The Police IG stressed that the action of the LNP authority should serve as a warning to all officers, adding that “if you step outside the rule of law, the law will take its course.” Meanwhile, IG Colemean expressed regrets on the unfortunate situation and extended his heartfelt apology and sympathy to the bereaved family, as he called on the family of the deceased to remain calm as the law takes its course. Preliminary information from the LNP’s investigation suggests that police officers responded to a violent situation involving threats against a resident of the Rehab community by suspected drug traffickers. Regrettably, during the response, Officer Trawally discharged his firearm, leading to the unintended death of James Kandy.
