PIH, TU Strengthen Health Education Partnership

Partners In Health (PIH) Liberia, has recommitted itself to strengthen health education at William V.S. Tubman University (TU) through continued collaboration and capacity building.
The pledge was made on Monday, July 13, 2026, during a courtesy visit by PIH Liberia Country Executive Director, Dr. Maxo Luma, to the university’s administration in Harper.
Dr. Luma described TU as one of PIH Liberia’s key academic partners, and a critical institution in training the future healthcare workforce.
“Whenever I am in Harper, I make it a point to meet with the leadership of TU to better understand the university’s challenges, because their struggles are our struggles.
Dr. Luma said, PIH’s focus on building local capacity aligns with government’s national development agenda, and the shared goal of training a new generation of health professionals.
The visit, he said, was to explore new areas of collaboration, and strengthen existing partnerships to improve health service delivery, particularly in the southeast.
Dr. Maria Rebecca Fe. Gueta, TU Vice President for Academic Affairs, said, the meeting focused on reviewing ongoing joint initiatives and planning future support.
She disclosed how TU, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, and with PIH’s support, has launched a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) program. The curriculum has already been submitted to the Liberia Board of Nursing and Midwifery for approval.
Dr. Gueta said, efforts are also underway to strengthen laboratory education through improved practical science instruction. As part of this, PIH will sponsor two TU faculty members for training at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) to enhance their laboratory examination and teaching skills.
She commended PIH for its long-term support to TU’s College of Health Sciences, noting that the organization has played a key role in the university’s accreditation process with the Liberia Board of Nursing and Midwifery.
PIH has also equipped the university’s laboratory, donated books, improved internet access, and helped establish an e-learning lab with more than 10 functioning computers for students.
“PIH has remained a dependable partner in advancing health sciences education at TU.”
Both institutions agreed to maintain regular engagement to identify new opportunities for collaboration and ensure that health education in Maryland County continues to grow.
