Emotions ran high in Kowai Town on Friday, October 2, when Peter Pailay officially handed over the leadership having served for nearly 24 years as the town chief.

Pailay, who served as a local leader for close to two and a half decades, handed over the affairs of the town to Anthony Kerkulah.

Kerkulah was elected unopposed through a white-ballot process.

The transition in leadership brought together residents, community leaders and members of the Pailay family. Their presence marked the end of a lengthy chapter in the history of Kowai Town.

During his tenure, Pailay was credited with the construction of a modern elementary school, and the installation of a hand pump that improved access to safe drinking water.

His administration also supported the rehabilitation of the main road linking Kowai Town to neighboring communities.

Pailay’s administration further supported local agriculture through the distribution of cocoa and palm seedlings to farmers, with assistance from development partners, and officials from the county.

Other projects he undertook included the construction of a midwives and a youth center.

At the handover ceremony, Pailay appreciated the people of Kowai Town for the confidence, cooperation and support they gave him throughout his years of service.

“I am happy to see the leadership transition peacefully.”

Pailay emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among residents.

He meanwhile, encouraged Kerkulah to maintain close contact with the locals, listen to their concerns, and continue pursuing initiatives to improve their living conditions.
