The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) on Thursday, October 29, announced a temporary shutdown of businesses on Water street (Waterside) as authorities move to tackle the severe sanitation problems.
The Waterside market is one of Monrovia’s busiest commercial hubs, which has entirely blocked safe passage for commuters.

City Manager Jones Williams announced Wednesday on a local radio station that during the shutting, businesses will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to allow a “major cleanup exercise” covering Ashmun Street through Water Street.

Williams described the area as “extremely dirty.”

He called on marketers, business owners, and residents to join the exercise to keep Waterside clean and healthy.

The planned shutdown is to temporarily interrupt trading activities as city authorities seek to improve sanitation, and restore cleanliness to the area.

Meanwhile, Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) spokesperson, Morris Desmond Brown, has confirmed how the members are prepared to cooperate with MCC.

Brown said, marketers will join city authorities in the cleanup campaign to give Waterside a facelift. The exercise will bring municipal authorities, and traders together to address sanitation concerns.
