MCC Accelerates Palm Grove Cemetery Transformation

The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) has intensified its ongoing cleanup and rehabilitation of the historic Palm Grove Cemetery.
The exercise is part of preparations for the 179th Independence Day celebrations, underscoring the city’s commitment to preserve the nation’s most treasured historical landmarks.
On Friday, Monrovia City Mayor John-Charuk Siafa, toured the cemetery as part of the cleanup campaign.
He reaffirmed the city government’s determination to restore the site to its former dignity.
The visit highlighted the administration’s vision to preserve the cultural heritage while improving sanitation and public spaces in the capital.
Situated on Center Street in central Monrovia, Palm Grove Cemetery serves as the final resting place of many of the distinguished statesmen, national heroes, and early political leaders.
Although the cemetery has immense historical and cultural significance, years of neglect left it overgrown, littered with waste, and partially occupied by Zogos, diminishing its importance as a national heritage site.
The ongoing rehabilitation includes clearing overgrown vegetation, removing accumulated garbage, cutting fallen tree branches, opening blocked drainage systems, and cleaning graves and walkways.
Siafa has meanwhile, assured citizens of MCC’s workings with government institutions, and development partners of its readiness to explore rehabilitation and reintegration programs.
