A 51-year-old man has been treated for wounds he sustained during a night time hunting expedition in Grand Kru County.
The victim, Alfred Sankah, is undergoing the medical treatment after he was shot during a late-night hunting incident in a forested area of Dorboh District.
The situation has raised concerns about the dangers posed by firearms used for hunting in remote communities.
Sankah, a resident of Dorboh District, reportedly sustained injuries around his face, and right eye after being struck by pellets from a single-barrel hunting gun.
According to a preliminary police report, the incident occurred at about 2: a.m. when a 25-year-old Neweah Buduo, who had been burning charcoal in the forest, reportedly went hunting.
Police said, Buduo heard a sound coming from the bush, and assumed it was a wild animal. He reportedly fired toward the sound before discovering Sankah lying on the ground with blood covering his face.
The suspect reportedly dropped the firearm, and fled the area, but later reported himself to the Buah Geeken Police Station on Tuesday, August 25.
Sankah was subsequently taken to a nearby health facility for treatment, while Buduo remains in police custody.
The incident has placed renewed attention on firearm safety during hunting activities, particularly in forested areas where visibility is limited, and people may be moving nearby.
Police say the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and that their findings will determine what legal action, if any, should follow.
