The Government of Liberia, through its official spokesperson, Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah, has disclosed ongoing plans and preparations for the construction of major roads in the country. The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) boss, revealed that the government has secured funds to address road constraints which has hindered smooth movement by citizens across the country, stating that the current administration wants to resolve obstacles that have derailed major progress, including economic development. Speaking at the Ministry of Information press briefing on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the MICAT boss emphasized that by August 2025 the actual reconstruction of roads will start. “We have gotten a grant from the Government of Japan worth US$18 million. The signing of the exchange notes and grant agreement will take place March 12 in Monrovia. Liberia Foreign Affairs Minister, Sarah Beslow Nyanti will sign on behalf of the government while the Japanese Ambassador to Monrovia will sign on behalf of the Japanese government,” he said.  In ensuring that roads are pliable across the country, the Minister Piah said most neighborhoods are poised to benefit from this initiative, pinpointing Johnsonville-to-Paynesville-to-Caldwell as key segments which have been earmarked. Piah further noted that in order for these roads to be long lasting, the government intends to make them composite; meaning the first layer of the road will be concrete and at the top of it will be asphalt.  In addition to that, the government’s communication head revealed that the Urban Resilience Project which is being supported by the World Bank, is also in full swing, “Funds have been secured for the rehabilitation of all roads in the Paynesville belt. This project is intended to solve all those roads that are damaged within that community, which will also include drainage. The World Bank provided 18 million USD for this project”, Minister Piah asserted. The MICAT official added that Sinkor and other parts of Central Monrovia will benefit from the pavement exercise, adding, “thanks to the Ministry of Public Works, our partners and the Government of Liberia for providing funding for those interventions.” Meanwhile, Minister Piah also revealed that road constructions in Paynesville and Sinkor will be completed by May, citing that all other road projects that were inherited will be 35 to 40% completed this year.  Source: LINA
