The Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) has called for greater use of digital technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the tourism sector.

LNTA wants the system to create new opportunities for businesses, communities and visitors.

The call was made on Monday, September 28, during the observance of World Tourism Day at the LNTA headquarters on 18th Street in Sinkor, Monrovia.

The celebration was held under the theme: “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.” The theme highlighted the growing importance of technology in promoting, and developing the tourism industry.

LNTA acting director, Melvin Nye, said tourism remains an important pillar of national development, because it has the potential to unite Liberians.

Nye said, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai considers tourism an important sector capable of bringing people together while contributing to economic growth, job creation, and national development.

He noted that the growing shift toward digital transformation makes technology increasingly important to the future of the tourism industry, particularly in promoting destinations, and connecting them with potential visitors.

Nye also praised senior staff and employees, saying: “The progress being made by the institution is the result of collective efforts.”

Paul Wungko, who delivered the keynote address, described tourism as a major national issue.

Wungko spoke on “Digital Transformation and the Future of Liberia Tourism.”

He pointed to the beaches, historical sites, cultural traditions, and other attractions, adding: “Digital technology, and AI could help showcase these assets to a wider international audience.”

He cautioned that while digital tools can improve the promotion, and presentation of the tourism destinations, visitors ultimately want to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Other speakers also emphasized tourism’s potential to create jobs, and empower tour guides, hotel operators, artists, cooks, drivers and small businesses.

The World Tourism Day celebration brought together current, and former government officials, senior LNTA staff and other stakeholders.

The event provided an opportunity to reflect on tourism potential while underlining digital innovation, and AI as tools for promoting the tourism destination.
