LIS To Uphold Professionalism

By Samuel Flomo, Jr.

The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) has concluded a three-day leadership and capacity-building seminar for senior officers.

LIS Commissioner General, Elijah F. Rufus, promised reforms that will create a “new immigration service” built on professionalism, accountability and improved public service.

The seminar was held from September 30 to October 2, at the Gbarnga Regional Justice and Security Hub in Bong County. It brought together directors, sectional heads, and commanders from the 15 counties.

The training was conducted under the theme: “Leading with Integrity: Strengthening Accountability, Professionalism, and the Fight Against Corruption.”

At the closed of the event, Rufus called on citizens to hold immigration officers accountable, and report misconduct whenever they encounter any.

“Please do not hesitate. Wherever we are going wrong, flag it up.”

Rufus disclosed how LIS is funded through public resources, and therefore, has a responsibility to remain accountable to the Liberian people.

He said, ongoing reforms were necessary to improve the performance and strengthen public confidence in immigration operations.

He urged senior officers to lead by example to include integrity, professionalism, and accountability that will guide their decisions and interactions with the public.

The seminar was to strengthen the leadership capacity of senior officers as well as exposed them to modern approaches of security management and institutional administration.

The three-day exercise also focused on strengthening accountability, fighting corruption, and improve leadership practices.

Participants welcomed the training, which they described as an important opportunity to strengthen their professional knowledge and leadership skills.
