Resident Judge of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Grand Kru County, His Honor Peter W. Gbeneweleh, has issued a strong defense of judicial independence.
Gbeneweleh called on judges, and judicial actors to uphold the constitution, and the laws while administering justice without fear, favor, or external influence.
Judge Gbeneweleh made the call Monday, August 10, during the formal opening of the August Term of Court in Barclayville City.
He delivered his charge under the theme: “The Court as a Promoter of Justice.”
Gbeneweleh: “Judges carry a constitutional responsibility to ensure that courts remain institutions where justice is determined, according to law, and not according to political influence, personal interests, intimidation, favoritism, or outside pressure.”
He added: “It is the duty of all judges to uphold, and support the constitution.”
His remarks placed judicial independence at the center of the opening ceremony.
He stressed the need for credibility of the judiciary, which he said, depends on the ability of judges to make impartial decisions regardless of the identity, status, influence, or circumstances of the parties before them.
The opening brought together a broad range of judicial, and legal stakeholders, including judges, state prosecutors, public defenders, practicing attorneys, magistrates, court officials, ministerial officers, and members of the bar.
