Some Monrovians and residents in suburb communities have been overwhelmed by flooding following weeks of torrential downpour.
The rains, which became intense on Sunday, June 28, to Wednesday, July1, created uneasiness in several homes where flood waters now deprived inhabitants from moving out and about.
Some of the residents have meanwhile, blamed the environmental hazard on government.
They forgot to recall that authorities at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have repeatedly warned them against building, or stop any structure in the swampy terrains as well as garbage disposal that would prevent free water flow.
The EPA’s warning has on many occasions been ignored often resulting to disasters.
What is Environment?
What the affected residents need to know is that, environment, not only concerned about science and deforestation.
Its studies helped residents understand human impacts on nature such as unnecessary waste disposals; guide sustainable resources use, and address urgent issues like climate change, pollution and deforestation.
In a related development, National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), has warned that Liberia would experience continued heavy rainfall in the coming weeks, increasing the risk of flooding in Monrovia and other vulnerable communities.
NDMA Executive Director Ansu V.S. Dulleh said, recent downpours have already inundated several low-lying areas, displacing families, damaging homes and businesses, and contaminating water sources.
The Agency has meanwhile, activated its national flood response plan by deploying assessment teams, coordinating with emergency responders and humanitarian partners, and identifying safe shelters for affected residents.
The Agency also urged citizens to remain vigilant, avoid building in waterways, keep drainage systems clear, and follow official weather advisories.
