“Embrace Your Shared Heritage”

This year’s July ‘26’ National Orator, Dr. Herbert Brewer, urged Liberians to proudly embrace their history as the foundation for national identity, unity and progress.

Brewer wants Liberians to reject narratives that undermine the rich heritage, instead Liberians should celebrate it as a source of strength for future generations.

He delivered the Independence Day oration at the Unification Pavilion in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County on the theme: “Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Narratives.”

He described Liberia’s history as one of the nation’s greatest assets, and a vital pillar for democratic governance, civic responsibility, and national renewal.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional and religious leaders, development partners, and citizens.

Dr. Brewer said, Liberia declaration of independence on July 26, 1847, remains a landmark achievement, not only for the nation, but for the African Continent, and the global African diaspora.

Brewer: Liberia’s independence demonstrated to the world that people of African descent possessed both the right, and the ability to govern themselves through a modern constitutional democracy.”

He said, the country’s historic achievement continues to inspire generations across Africa, and beyond.

Reflecting on Liberia’s journey, Dr. Brewer acknowledged both the country’s accomplishments, and its challenges, saying: “Every generation has inherited the responsibility to strengthen the Republic, rather than judge previous generations without understanding the circumstances they faced.”

He said, history should serve as a guide for national growth and reconciliation.

Dr. Brewer also praised the contributions of indigenous communities, returning descendants of Africa, and the nation’s early founders, whose cooperation, diplomacy, and shared vision laid the foundation for its sovereignty.

He described the country’s survival through political transitions, and external pressures as evidence of the resilience, and determination of the Liberian people.

Brewer reminded citizens that history predates the establishment of the Republic, noting that thriving African societies with established systems of governance, commerce, diplomacy, and justice existed long before independence.

He said, recognizing the broader historical foundation strengthens national identity, and ensures that contribution from every community is reflected in Liberia’s story.

While calling for greater national unity, Dr. Brewer described Liberia as a nation built through shared sacrifice, mutual respect, and collective leadership.

He meanwhile, encouraged Liberians to rise above divisions, preserve the spirit of inclusion, and work together toward a more peaceful, democratic, and prosperous nation.

In one of the most memorable moments of his address, Dr. Brewer declared: “Never be ashamed of your history; it is a shared inheritance. Claim it. Be proud of it.”

He then reminded Liberians that true patriotism is measured by leaving behind a stronger nation than the one inherited, while calling on all citizens to remain committed to preserve the history.
