Boakai Seeks Common Goal Among MRU Countries
President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. has called on the Mano River Union (MRU) countries to collectively work together to solve the prevailing challenges confronting the region. ,“If all of us work together, learn from each other, and protect our future we will have a stronger Union in West Afrca,” President Boakai said. The Liberian leader stressed that “we know our development challenges and the prevailing and emerging social, political, economic and environmental issues that we are faced with is overwhelming, therefore, “I am appealing to our developing partners and delegates to be open with the issues during these deliberations adding, your insights and suggestions will help us. President Boakai was speaking Monday, July 22, 2024, when he delivered the Keynote Address and officially opened the Mano River Union High-Level Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Defense, and Stakeholders held at the EJS Ministerial Complex. The Liberian Leader further encouraged the MRU Countries to collectively invest in agriculture, and free movement at the various borders, improve health care, education, security and the rule of Law. He further explained that the MRU states need to demonstrate the highest commitment to the union because it has a variety of young people that share the same tribes or languages and customs, noting, “our challenges and solutions are the same.” The Chief Executive reminded members of the union not to forget the negative impact that Ebola and COVID-19 had on the MRU Countries. The MRU aims to achieve greater unity and solidarity and to enhance cooperation between member states and peaceful coexistence among its peoples. The Mano River Union (MRU) was established in October 1973 to promote the free movement of goods and people between Liberia and Sierra Leone. Guinea joined in 1980. Ivory Coast joined in 2008.
