President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia and other heads of state on Saturday, January 17, 2026, attended the inauguration of Guinea junta leader, Mamady Doumbouya in Conakry. Oumbouya was recently elected President, eroding himself of the military title.
Boakai, according to a release, was in the midst of a distinguished assemblage of African heads of state, senior diplomats, and leaders of regional and international institutions.
Along with Pres. Boakai were Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal; Adama Barrow of The Gambia; Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone. Bio is also the incumbent Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema of Gabon, Assimi Goïta, President of Mali; Mohamed Ould El Ghazaouani, President of Mauritania; and Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
Other countries were represented at the highest levels, including the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which was represented by Kashim Shettima, Vice President, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The inauguration ceremony also featured high-level participation from key regional and international organizations, including the African Union, represented by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission; ECOWAS; and the African Development Bank Group, alongside other multilateral and diplomatic institutions.
Pres. Boakai’s participation underscored Liberia’s strong support for Guinea’s transition to constitutional civilian governance, and reaffirmed it commitment to regional peace, democratic values, and stability in West Africa.
Boakai was among his African counterparts to demonstrate solidarity, and celebrate with the people of Guinea, highlighting the importance of unity, mutual respect, and collective responsibility in advancing democratic governance, regional integration, and sustainable development.
On the margins of the inauguration, Pres. Boakai engaged with fellow leaders, and senior officials on issues of regional security, economic cooperation, trade, and people-to-people relations, consistent with Liberia’s foreign policy objectives.
The President also had quality time mingling with his compatriots, who are currently residing in Guinea.
A representative group of Diaspora Liberians in Guinea converged on the Ahmed Sekou International Airport and welcomed Boakai and delegation.
In interaction between the Liberian and Guinean leaders, Pres. Boakai conveyed his warmest congratulations to Pres. Dumbouya, reechoed country’s continued interest in engagements that help to deepen and broaden bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Guinea and its regional partners in the interest of peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
Pres. Boakai was accompanied by his wife, Kartumu Y. Boakai, and a shortlist of top government officials, including Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of State Without Portfolio Hadja Mamaka Bility, and National Security Advisor Samuel K. Woods.
Boakai has meanwhile, returned home following the conclusion of the inauguration activities.
