The Catholic Diocese of Cape Palmas has taken a major step to improve secondary education in the entire Southeastern counties.
For that, they have officially commissioned a newly constructed high school in Pleebo City, Maryland County.
The new school is owned and operated by the Sisters of the Holy Family, who for many years, taught students from a makeshift structure under difficult conditions.
The facility, which will serve as an extension of the well-known Nazareth Preparatory School, was formally dedicated, and blessed on Wednesday, September 24.
The ceremony brought together Bishop of the Diocese, priests, Sisters of the Holy Family, government officials, teachers, parents, students and community members.
Reverend Andrew J. Karnley, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cape Palmas said, the project represents the core vision of Catholic education in promoting the holistic development of young people.
Karnley dispelled the notion that Catholic education was limited to the classroom.
”The school stands for the total development of the human person. It is not only about providing knowledge, but also about character formation.”
He explained how the Church prepares people, not just for life after death, but for responsible and disciplined life on earth by instilling moral values, integrity and good citizenship.
Karnley said, the commissioning is just the beginning, as more work needs to be done to fully equip the facility with science laboratories, library, furniture and modern learning materials.
The project was initiated in partnership with Kindermissionswerk in Germany, and another Rome based donor.
Similarly, the Diocese is undertaking another school construction in Barclayville City, Grand Kru County.
Meanwhile, the President of the William Tubman University, Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, has lauded the Catholic Church for its continued investment in education.
As a show of support, Dr. Menjay pledged to donate five laptor computers to the new high school to strengthen teaching, learning and administrative work.
The new Nazareth High School facility is expected to reduce overcrowding, improve the learning environment, and give students in Pleebo-Sodoken District and surrounding areas a better opportunity to compete academically with other students.
