The Standard Bearer of the People’s Party (TPP), Joseph K. Bannie, has warned President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration against an “impulsive” use of state institutions, and the justice system.
Such acts, Bannie claimed is targeted at officials of the previous administration accountable to misdeeds.
He said, while the government has a legitimate responsibility to investigate allegations of corruption, abuse of public resources, and other wrongdoings committed under the previous administration, such efforts must be guided by the constitution, and established legal procedures.
He warned that any perception that the justice system is being used to settle political scores could undermine the credibility of the administration, and weaken public confidence in the democratic institutions.
“Yes, this government is doing great to hold the past government accountable, but it must not be impulsive. Let it be through due process. The law is not for personal pleasure.”
Bannie’s comments come amid heightened political debates surrounding the Boakai administration’s efforts to pursue accountability for alleged misconduct during the George Weah administration.
He argued that the pursuit of accountability should not be confused with political retaliation, insisting that every person accused of wrongdoing must be afforded the protections guaranteed under the law.
