The founder of the Dorbor Bedell Foundation, Dorbor Bedell, has called for renewed investment in tourism, and infrastructure.

To that, Bedell said, it would serve as a pathway to revive Harper City struggling economy, and address unemployment.

He told residents in Harper on Friday, October 23, that Harper has “untapped economic potential that remains largely neglected despite its historical importance as one of the oldest cities.”

Bedell: “Harper natural attractions, including its long stretch of sandy beaches, Lake Shepherd, and other coastal features could be developed into major tourism destinations.”

He noted that with proper investment, the sector could stimulate small businesses, create jobs for youth, and generate revenue for the county.

“We have the beaches, the lake and the history. What we’ve missed is the investment, and the will to develop these assets.”

Bedell expressed concern over Harper’s economic decline in recent years. He pointed to deteriorating infrastructure, limited job opportunities, and slow development as compared to its past prominence as a former commercial hub in the Southeast.

Bedell also called for more open policies to attract visitors from across Africa. He argued that intra-African tourism could bring new spending, and cultural exchange to the city.

Beyond tourism, Bedell highlighted education as a critical pillar for development.

He pointed to ongoing efforts by his Foundation to support local communities, including plans to renovate the long-abandoned Demonstration School in Harper; a project, he said, will improve learning conditions.

Bedell urged both the government and private investors, as well as Marylanders in the diaspora to prioritize Harper in development planning.

The Dorbor Bedell Foundation has been active in the county with community-based initiatives focused on education and youth empowerment.
