The opposition National Patriotic Party (NPP) now faced a renewed internal turmoil after three executive committee members were purged.
The officials were expunged for endorsing a proposed opposition unity roundtable, which former president George Oppong Weah had initiated at his Jamaica Resort residence, outside Monrovia.
The affected officials are Emmanuel Goll, Neileh Daitouah, and Daoda Nesco. The three affected NPP stalwart’s letterheaded statement that supported the proposed opposition roundtable without authorization from the party’s leadership was considered counter-productive its objectives.
The disciplinary action has immediately raised fresh questions about internal democracy, leadership control, and the future political direction of the NPP as the party moves to a convention in December.
The suspension was announced during a press conference attended by a limited number of executive committee members, including the national chairman, George Mulbah, secretary-general, Andrew Peters, who also serves as executive director of the National Identification Registry, and Allison Barco, an ally of Mulbah.
The latest development comes against the backdrop of longstanding disagreements within the NPP, with competing interests emerging over the leadership, and political strategy ahead of the 2029 elections.
Mulbah has also faced allegations from some party members that he maintains government employment while serving in a senior position within the opposition party.
The allegation has fueled further criticism, and suspicion among some NPP members.
Mulbah’s response to the claim was not immediately available.
The three suspended officials are reportedly supporters of NPP standard bearer, and former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor, who is currently facing prosecution.
Jewel’s legal difficulties have further complicated an already sensitive political environment within the party.
Meanwhile, Weah proposed opposition unity roundtable has opened another major political fault line.
While some NPP members reportedly support the initiative, the suspension of the three officials demonstrates the depth of disagreement over how the party should participate in any opposition coordination.
