The Joint Security assigned in River Gee County has arrested more than a dozen motorcyclists, and seized nine motorcycles from their operators.
The incident followed a violent clash on Tuesday’s night. It was linked to an internal leadership dispute within the motorcyclists’ union.
The incident occurred late Tuesday, August 11, in Gbeapo-Kanweaken District, and involved riders from both Fish Town, and Gbeapo-Kanweaken, according to authorities.
The county Police Commander, Theophilus Toe Togba said, tensions had built within the union, which eventually boiled over into a physical confrontation.
During the fight that ended in free for all, several riders sustained injuries.
The situation, Togba said, was volatile, but security officers quickly intervened, and prevented it from spreading further, thereby restoring public order.
Security forces moved in, and detained multiple individuals on the spot. Nine motorcycles were also impounded as evidence.
Togba confirmed that an active investigation is underway to determine, who instigated the violence, and what exactly triggered the confrontation.
“We are also working to identify, and apprehend other persons of interest, who fled the scene. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.”
The county Superintendent, Mike T. Swengbe, has meanwhile, called on all motorcyclists, and residents to remain calm while security agencies handle the matter.
“We understand the important role motorcyclists play in transportation. But we will not tolerate violence. Let us allow the law to take its course. Peace is the only way forward.”
Swengbe urged union members to resolve internal disagreements through dialogue with county authorities, and union leadership, rather than through violence.
