Police assigned in Barclayville, Grand Kru County, have launched an investigation into the reported stealing of solar street lights, panels, and poles from several locations in the city, with three juveniles arrested in connection with the incident.
The arrests come just days before the July 26 Independence Day celebrations, raising concerns among residents, and city authorities about the impact of the theft on public safety, security, and preparations for the national celebration.
The suspects, identified by police as Junior Pupoh, Samuel J. Koffa, and Prince Teah, all residents of Sector Community, were reportedly apprehended by the Community Watch Forum following a three-day search for the missing solar street-lights and other pieces of equipment.
The three suspects, all juveniles, were discovered on a farm in possession of some pieces of the stolen equipment.
They admitted to have broken the poles, and removed the solar lights, telling reporters that their actions were motivated by the lack of lighting in their own homes.
Police have confirmed that the matter remains under investigation, and that the suspects are expected to face prosecution in accordance with the law.
Authorities, working alongside community leaders, are also investigating whether other individuals may have been involved in the theft, and are making efforts to recover any additional missing equipment.
The theft has generated concern among residents, who say, the solar street lights were intended to improve security, beautify Barclayville, and provide adequate lighting for the locals, specifically, during the Independence Day celebrations.
One community member expressed frustration over the disappearance of the lights, saying: “Residents had searched for several days without success.
City Major, Madam Comfort Nimely Bloh, has strongly condemned the act, describing it as “demonic” and a setback to development efforts in Barclayville.
Madam Bloh has called on parents, community elders, and youth leaders to take greater responsibility for guiding young people, and encourage them to protect, rather than destroy, public development projects.
Meanwhile, police and community leaders have strengthened security around public infrastructure in Barclayville, and prevent further incidents of vandalism and theft.
