19-Yrs-Old Woman Family Accuses Midwife Of Negligence
Relatives of a 19-year-year-old woman in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County has accused a midwife of negligence and improper delivery procedures, which they claim resulted in serious medical complications for their daughter. The woman’s father, James Kwehna, alleged that his daughter (name withheld) went into labor on August 20, 2024, at their New Buchanan home and was taken to the home of a local midwife for delivery. Kwehna alleged that the midwife, identified as Torkonwolu Jacob, tied his daughter’s stomach and placed a cooking spoon in her mouth something he believes, resulted into severe complications. According to him, his daughter spent three days with the midwife before being transferred to a local clinic and subsequently to the Liberian Government Hospital, where she lost her child during surgery. The family has filed a formal complaint with the Liberia National Police in Buchanan, alleging that the midwife’s actions led to a severe womb injury for their daughter. Midwife Jacob, has firmly denied these allegations, stating that she did not perform any delivery-related procedures on the patient as claimed by the family. Jacob asserted that the patient initially refused to deliver at her residence, noting that she then transferred her to the local clinic on the same day and subsequently to the Liberian Government Hospital for further care. Reports indicate that the young lady is currently in critical condition at the Liberian Government Hospital. The women and children section and the crime service division of the Liberia National Police are currently investigating the case. Source: LINA
